Republican majorities in the Congress and conservatives on the Supreme Court are ceding power instead of protecting it, giving President Donald Trump more and more control over what the Constitution separated in three.
Congress is supposed to declare war
But Republican lawmakers cheered when Trump launched an air offensive against Iran rather than balking that many were kept out of the loop.
House Speaker Mike Johnson didn’t seem to mind reports that the White House would be limiting its information-sharing with lawmakers. His response suggested concern about leaks than about guarding lawmakers’ duty to oversee the executive.
A similar story with tariffs
Regulating international trade is something the Constitution puts on lawmakers’ plates. A series of laws over the past hundred years slowly gave power over tariffs to the president, but Trump has taken that authority and weaponized it to make demands of other countries, as he did Friday when he cut off trade talks with Canada, the latest twist in a trade war he engineered and is scripting like a reality show.
Now, the Supreme Court has clipped the power of lower courts
Conservative justices limited the ability of district court justices to issue nationwide injunctions against executive policies.
“This really brings back the Constitution,” President Donald Trump said without a whiff of irony at the White House on Friday.
The decision also literally lets him ignore the plain language of the 14th Amendment, at least for now.
Rebalancing of US powers
“This is a fundamental shift in the balance between the powers of the presidency and the powers of the courts,” said Elie Honig, CNN’s senior legal analyst. “This ruling that we just got impacts everything about the way that the presidency exercises power.” https://view.newsletters.cnn.com/messages/1751062903369cba96943586a/raw?utm_source=cnn_What+Matters+for+June+27%2C+2025&utm_medium=email&bt_ee=OjXOxrJl2b2EwJ7IcHfj4d6Nf5pMnu9tJaJQKn2xKxyGZBlRj%2FUUyCxVeCBali%2Bf&bt_ts=1751062903371
Don’t exercise outdoors alone, and learn to recognize the signs of heatstroke in yourself and others. Getting out of the heat, even for a few hours, is protective during heat waves. Air conditioning and electric fans can help, but may not always be available, such as during a power outage. Dousing the skin in water may be an effective alternative or going to designated cooling centers in your community.
If you feel unwell, weak, confused or agitated, those are all “red flags,” Stearns said. Stumbling, collapsing or inability to coordinate movement are also signs to look out for in yourself and others around you.
If you feel especially down in the summer, it is important to acknowledge those feelings and seek medical help.
“People really need to be aware that suicidal feelings are more common,” said Norman Rosenthal, a psychiatrist at Georgetown University School of Medicine who first described SAD in the scientific literature in 1984. “And then they should really go get help if that’s happening.”
Cooling off may help, though there have not yet been clinical trials testing this method. Rosenthal and his colleagues recommended patients with summer depression take cold showers and stay in air-conditioned places. This intuitive intervention seemed to work and alleviated his patients’ symptoms.
These effects, though, only lasted as long as the patients stayed cool; once his patients returned outside to the summer heat, the effect seemed to evaporate. (In contrast, winter SAD is treated with light therapy, which has a more persistent effect.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2025/06/24/summer-heat-brain-mental-health-tips/?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wp_news_alert_revere&location=alert
The UK-based Twinning Project is partnering with the Golden State Warriors in a program to teach incarcerated men at Solano State Prison in Vacaville, California, how to coach basketball. The program has provided a purpose and self confidence for these men, some of whom are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
