That Trump would call for this is not terribly surprising; he has spent years occasionally urging Republican leaders to scrap the filibuster. Nor is it particularly likely to provide an actual offramp in the shutdown; those same GOP leaders have steadfastly declined Trump’s entreaties before and rejected this idea repeatedly in recent weeks. It’s not even clear whether enough senators would vote for such a change if GOP leaders went along with it.

So practically speaking, it’s a pointless interjection from the president.

But it does matter in one way: It’s Trump yet again inserting himself into these kinds of talks in ways that are thoroughly unhelpful to his party. And this has become a trend.

Bill Gates thinks climate change is a serious problem but it won’t be the end of civilization. He thinks scientific innovation will curb it, and it’s instead time for a “strategic pivot” in the global climate fight: from focusing on limiting rising temperatures to fighting poverty and preventing disease.

A doomsday outlook has led the climate community to focus too much on near-term goals to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that cause warming, diverting resources from the most effective things that can be done to improve life in a warming world, Gates said. The New York City mayoral election’s political typology is very 2026. It features Andrew Cuomo, 67, a scandalized former governor and established center-left Democrat; Zohran Mamdani, 34, an avowed democratic-socialist state Assembly member; and Curtis Sliwa, 71, the activist and Guardian Angels founder who has focused almost exclusively on urban crime since 1979.

Mamdani, who leads in polls, has rocketed to fame. His young age and his criticism of Israel’s war effort in Gaza have drawn attention. Mamdani has declined to condemn the controversial phrase “globalize the intifada” when asked (though he has said he will not use it, himself). The conservative National Review has called him a “public menace” for it.

Mamdani’s democratic socialism, however, is the main point of fascination. Plans for free buses, frozen rent in rent-stabilized apartments, and city-run grocery stores are viewed by many as implausible. Writing in the conservative City Journal, Manhattan Institute fellow Ken Girardin warns: “A review of [Mamdani’s] statements fails to reveal any sort of limiting principle with respect to private property or the extent to which Mamdani thinks the economy should be market-driven, if at all.” Not everyone is afraid. At Politico Magazine, Brookings Turkey Project Director Asli Aydintasbas writes that publicly funded grocery stores seemed to work in Istanbul, recounting a visit to one. The store was available only to families with low-enough incomes, and its shelves were stocked mostly with items from “cheaper brands sourced from small manufacturers that I had never heard of—companies happy to donate goods to the city stores because they could write them off their taxes.” In that neighborhood, at least, the store was popular.

His “charm and intelligence” are helping him win, for now, the argument over whether his policies would bring improvement or devastation. And yet, Dionne writes: “For history buffs, Mr. Mamdani has done the service of rekindling an interest in a largely forgotten American tradition, the ‘sewer socialists’ who ran a significant list of cities in the last century.” They were mostly concerned with “repairing the grubbiest of urban amenities because doing so underscored their aim of running corruption-free governments that did whatever they could to improve the lives of working-class people in their jurisdictions,” Dionne notes. At 3 a.m. I am awake in thought not yet abe to dictate. My brain has kept me awake.  My bogy still reads with one eye permitting this write.

This awake concerns the afterglow/after thought of Harv’s Saturday FaceTime hour with birthday granddaughter Amber.  Their first facetime hour probabe come year’s earlier in the Otto Apex NC bedroom of GP Harv.  Amder was setting up a gp to Amber reading session which never happened — that, Harv counta as facetime one.

Update of published blog draws Harv back into balance, delaying a seemingly rushed over-reaction gush to the Amber FaceTime via txt to Chris.

2025oct21W7am — the week before my routine 3-month PCP visit begins with a blood draw — slower and more bureaucratic than even — a temptation for frustration.  Taking my work computer keeps me focused to avoid distraction temptations.  “I hate old people and MUST avoid the distraction by ‘using the facility the way it is NOT the way it ought to be.”

The temptations to be distracted are ‘every where’ — thus Harv encourages his self to focus — thus he looks to an outline of what he wants from his next week’s visit with his 3-month PCP visit. (1) No pain.  (2) Diet / nutrition have morphed as is his usual lifestyle.  Harv’s goal is to lose weight for longevity.

Medications used exhibit EXPRESSION may be current communication priority.
